Comments: Good site, enjoyed the pics. My Grandfather James Murray RNZAF served with 462 Sqn in 1943 in the Middle East. Initially this was 10 Sqn which became 462 RAAF Sqn. he finished his tour there and then went back to the U.K. to instruct at the H.C.U.'s. He survived the war and flew for the RNZAF flying Dakotas around the world. Would be interested in hearing from anyone who may have known him.

Comments: My uncle was a rear gunner in 462 squadron and became a POW in October of 1944 when his Halifax was hit attacking the Ruhr. The pilot ordered the gunners to bail out but several crew members had been hit and parachutes burnt so the other pilot brought the damaged plane back to England where it landed safely and all the crew survived. My uncle meanwhile was being beaten up by some German civilians and had his tongue partly severed, until rescued by the German army. He was a POW until the end of the war and never flew in any sort of aircraft for the rest of his life, which was spent in the Lake District in England where he ran youth hostels for many years. His name was Joseph Alexander Smith and he was born on December 12, 1912, and was considered very old for air crew. The rest of his crew called him "DAD"! I believe he was on his 26th or 27th mission when he baled out.He died in January 2000.
